RINGWOOD CERAMICS

This is my latest body of work created under lockdown (due to covid 19) in South Africa.
I live on the Atlantic coast in a village in the Western Cape, sandwiched between rocky sandstone mountains covered with fynbos and an icy ocean with kelp forests reaching for sunlight.
This work reflects a clay journey to find freedom within when our physical freedom was restricted.
I stumbled upon an engrossing ceramic technique called "kurinuki". A process of carving, extracting out of a lump of clay instead of building up like most other ceramic techniques.
I worked with the materials at hand and made carving tools with whatever I could find.
I foraged for brushes in the garden, anything that could create marks and textures in the slip.
My desire was to create a sense of place and belonging for each of these tea bowls...and the most exciting thing about this story is that the journey continues...
